Gaging with closed loop to compensation causes the grinder to automatically produce parts within the best possible size consistency. The result is the production of parts whose size is at nominal with minimum variability. The benefits include lower scrap, lower direct labor, higher productivity, and improved part conformance.

Parts flow from the grinder into a fixture where all of the parts are measured in real time. The controller samples the measured data, assembles it into subgroups and generates an average plot which is displayed in an X-bar and R format. At a glance the operator can see size distribution and trend.

If the size trend indicates the need for wheel compensation, then a signal is automatically sent to achieve the desired compensation. In operation, the controller continuously monitors the effectiveness of the control loop and statistically determines if the upper and lower control limits can be further reduced. This process is repeated until optimal part size control is achieved.
